Dan - the polyGeekDan Florio – Creative Actionscript Developer

I’m a freelance Actionscript/Flex/AIR developer working from home in Crestline, California. I’m available for occasional office visits in the Southern California area. I am not available for fulltime onsite work for anyone at any price.

What I can do for you:

My focus has been on rich media viewers in Flash and Flex. That’s creating custom video players that integrate dynamic navigations, slide shows, etc. I can build you a Flex app that integrates with your database using binary ( AMF Remote Objects or AMFPHP ), webservices, xml, etc.

My core skills, at your command:

  • Flex/Actionscript development
  • Video players
  • Database driven Flex Applications ( see RunPee.com as example )
  • AIR applications: SQL-lite, custom chrome, local file system storage, etc.
  • User eXperience design and usability
  • Bitmap manipulation and effects
  • Interactive 3D interfaces with PaperVision3D or Flash 10
  • But wait, there’s more…tell me how I can help you and your company

Note: I am pro-American and support equal rights for all as our founding fathers intended. Specifically, I believe that gay couples should enjoy the same rights and privileges of a heterosexual couple. I DO NOT work for bigots. If you disagree with the preceding then just keep on walking. We don’t serve your kind around here.

RunPee.com 3/01/2008 – current
RunPee.com is my own personal project. The idea, features, coding, design, UX are all my work. ( The only exception is the animation of the n that RunPees which was done by Chad Wixom. )

In creating this site I wanted to make it usable for non-savvy computer users – thus the large buttons for the most common features. I expect that the vast majority will use this site only to get information about when to RunPee during a movie. And very few will ever add data. Since this is a wiki I attempted to use a conversational tone with all the text to try and put people at ease. For instance, in the sorting nav on the upper-left the option alfebetical is purposly misspelled. The thought is that people who notice that will feel more at ease about adding their own content if they see that there are already mistakes.

The site was created with the Flex framework using AMFPHP/MySql on the backend.

DarkSynth 12/10/2007 – current
This is a video player – named DarkSynth that I’ve created for a group of doctors who use it to show videos from private conferences that they host – it’s all private so I can’t show the video player on their site. In fact, I can’t even see it myself. What you see here is the same video player with my content added. You can see that each video comes with a selection of slides – which in the doctor’s version are from a PowerPoint presentation.

Features:

  • You can see the maximize button in the upper-right. The doctors really like being able to toggle between a large video window or large slides.
  • The data is loaded from an XML file. I would have preferred using a database but they didn’t want to support that.
  • One production issue is that the PowerPoint slides are exported sequentially but they don’t always want to show each slide. So for instance a presentation might have slides 01-12, and 15-21, just as an example. That would mean adding lots of redundant XML data – a node for each slide. Instead I wrote some code to load a sequence of slides even if there are gaps in the filenames. All I need is the name of the last slide. If a slide is missing it doesn’t get added to the display so it doesn’t show up as a broken image in the slide viewer. That really streamlined production and gives them the ability to easily change which slides are shown.
  • Using a datagrid for the navigation isn’t very common but it really helps out here by making it very easy for the user to sort through the videos.

I’ve formed a great relationship with this group. They know what they want but not how to get it. They really appreciate that I’ve listened to them and come up with solutions to sometimes contradictory requests – like a large video and slides in a small space.

I still do tweaks to the video player as needed and I handle the video encoding for them.

pixDIF 10/2008

pixDIF is an Adobe AIR application that I created for designers and developers. It helps people measure distances on screen and compare design comps to design implementations to see where the differences lie. The app is free to download from the Adobe AIR Marketplace.

Concenflickration Concenflickration is based of the common game Concentration where you flip images over in pairs and try to match them up. What’s different about this version is that the images are pulled at random from Flickr public database.

Note: Concenflickration is currently unavailable as I rebuild it to work with a MySQL database using AMFPHP

XanaduWest XanaduWest.com : My personal photography website. Created way back in 2006. It’s probably the best example of my design skills that I’m not well known for. :-) The highlight of the site is that it’s entirely driven by XML. So one file controls the layout of the navigation and the photos within that category. That’s not earth shattering today but it was on the edge when I made it.
You can read more about the project or visit the site.

PXP2 PXP2 : A utility class written in Actionscript 2 to load and convert XML into an Object of Arrays. You supply the path to the XML file and the callback function to return the parsed data to and PXP2 does the rest. Very similar to E4x but for Actionscript 2.

Lightning : Dynamic lightning created entirely with Actionstript.
pix
LiquidText LiquidText : Solution for placing dynamic text in irregular shapes, even if those shapes are moving.
pix
videoMaru videoMaru.com : Solution for creating custom video interfaces in Flash with no coding required.

Pentominoes Pentominoes : A little puzzle interactive that I created years ago.

Hi i am new to flash. I have a query. I need to fetch my flash template's static text from xml. if i change it to dynamic then it is not visible in my swf template anymore.

@Jenny, I haven't worked in Flash for a long time. But I think the problem might have something to do with the type of TextFields you have. If they are static TextFields then you can't add text to them. Just select each TextField and change it's type. If that doesn't work then make sure you're parsing the xml correctly. These things can be very time consuming to fix.

If you're working with AS2 then you might want to think about using PXP2 to load/parse your XML.

good luck.

I am a feelance web developer and I am looking for more strategic partners to develop projects with..

I read your information and I think you might be able to help me enhance an existing project and also take it to the next level for version 2. I am looking for a senior flash architect for heading up new projects and to work sometimes with my local developer here in orange county california. I think this is up your skill sets.

I am going to tradeshow that starts at the end of this week so looking for some hours over the next few days.

We would also like to start version 2 with a senior developer..
