Book review : Containment, by Christian Cantrell

Kindle $2.99 paperback $14.1725,000 copy sold as of January 2011 During a conversation with Christian Cantrell -Product Manager and Application Developer on the Adobe AIR team - at 360Flex in DC last Fall I discovered that he was a science fiction author. I'm a huge SciFi fan and couldn't wait to read his books. I started with Containment which I'll review here. You can read an interview with...

What would it take to use up all IPv6 addresses?

In case you didn't know the Internet is about to run out of IP addresses. Or at least IP addresses using IPv4. After that addresses will have to be assigned using IPv6 which has considerably more possible addresses. IPv6 has a total of 2128 possible addresses. For technical reasons - there's always technical reasons - the first 1-byte of each address is reserved to differentiate it from IPv4...

Walkabout in Away3D

For a project I'm working on I need to create a virtual 3D space that I can move about in. Sort of like a first person shooter. It's surprisingly simple to create the space and simple movements with Away3D. The only complication that I ran into has nothing much to do with Away3D but with the nuances with trigonometry. view source I cover how to build the mesh, that makes up the ground, with a...

Away3D Dynamic Terrains with HeightMapModifier

One of the things that I love about Away3D is that doing simple things is simple. You don't have to jump through a bunch of hoops and write a bunch of code just to display an irregular mesh - like the one on the right. The mesh to the right is created very simply by placing a Plane in the scene. // Plane var plane : Plane = new Plane(); plane.width = 4000; plane.height = 4000; plane.segmentsW =...

Prime Patterns?

The other night I was messing around with a very large array of the first 64000 prime numbers - download here - to see if I could find some pattern in their distribution. I was really just making crap up and plotting crazy things while I watched Carl Sagan's Contact on the side monitor. I had read about the Ulam Spiral, a.k.a. Prime Spiral, and Sacks spiral and thought I'd mess around with...

Radial Gradient Explorer

Making anything other than the simplest radial gradient is an amazing pain the the ass. I created this just to make a simple sphere-looking circle. I put enough work into it that I figured it was worth the effort to make it useful to others. You should be able to use this explorer to create the look that you need and then copy the code show below the circle into your app to get the same look.

Gradient Disk

I've always loved gradients. Either computer generated or in nature. Here's the SWF of the image above with the gradients rotating around in opposite directions. package { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.display.GradientType; import flash.geom.Matrix; import flash.utils.Timer; import flash.events.TimerEvent; public class GradientDisk extends Sprite { private var _tic : Timer;...

Mandelbroty-looking things on a sphere using Away3D

Click on image to see it in motion view source For the holidays I'm taking time off from other projects and messing around with Away3D and Spherical Coordinates. And this is what I serendipitously came up with. ( Note: I wasn't aiming for this at all but that's when the coolest stuff comes out. )  Do you notice the two infinity-symbols that encircle the sphere? How it works I was going for...

Randomly generated Sierpinski pyramid with Away3D

There is an interesting little trick for generating the Sierpinski triangle. Pick 3 points on the xy-plane and label them A, B, and C. (As a group I’ll call them ABC.) Pick a fourth point and label it X0. Now randomly pick a point from the ABC group. From X0 make a new point that is the mid-point between your random ABC selection and X0. Label that point X1. Now from X1 do the same thing...

TRON Legacy movie review

Let me say first off that I really enjoyed TRON. I thought it was visually stunning; the acting was more than adequate; Olivia Wilde was impishly cute; and the soundtrack is right up there with Inception as best OST of the year. For a Cyber Fiction movie it is a must see. And I saw it twice during opening weekend. ( IMAX 3D FTW! ) However, in my opinion, it was not without it's flaws. I'll...
