Possible Flash player bug
January 19th, 2008 . by polyGeekNote: I have submitted a bug for this at the Adobe Flash player bug/feature request site where you can vote on it. If/when I hear something back I’ll be certain to share it here.
Since installing the latest release of the Flash player - 9,0,115,0 - I’ve noticed some strange behavior regarding the audio portion of videos. Specifically, everything works normally but every few days I’ll go to watch a video and the audio is gone. I restart the browser and the audio/video work perfectly.
I’m using FireFox 2.0.0.11 on WinXP. I haven’t tested this on IE because it takes a few days for this to happen and I can’t bear to use IE for that long. :-)
I did a Google search on the matter and nothing popped out at me. I’d like to see if anyone else has this issue before reporting a bug.

I had the same but I soon found it was because I had my USB head set plugged into my screen and it always happened after my screen had gone to sleep, thus hidding the headphones as a playback device. After restarting the browser it cam back.
I’ve run into that more than a few times. Especially using youtube and seeqpod. The content will load and stop playing about a few seconds into the video/audio. I thought it was because I am usually running flexbuilder and the debugger at the same time when I notice the behavior. FireFox 2.0.0.11 on WinXP as well.
@Ramsey, yeah, I’ve had that happen at ESPN.com a few times. It plays for 5-8 seconds and then stops. Refreshing the page just leads to the same thing. Restarting the browser is the only thing that fixes it.
yeah, same thing happens to me. every few days using the new flash player and Firefox 2.0.11. Just video without sound.
@tambi, Thanks for letting me know that you have the same issue. I’ll submit a bug to the Flash player db.
Wow, I thought it was something to do with my system. I’ve got the same specs and the problem is similar. It’s only happened a couple of times, but I don’t watch a ton video. When I do, I’ve found it was after I had a youtube video paused for a while (distracted by work :) ). Although it hasn’t happened often enough for me to say that definitively.
I have the same symptoms as comment #3. Even on older (pre 115) players.
I found, back then, that I could trigger the problem by having lots of tabs with embedded youtube etc videos in. It seems having too many instances of the Flash player open in one browser causes none of the videos to work.
I am running Vista, and on firefox, i can’t run any flash player-related movies. They stop after 5 seconds. Video and audio. IE works just fine though, except it can’t run certain video files, which is why I use Firefox. Anyone able to help out?
I also notice many bug of the flash player a the beginning on my website and then on youtube or other sites.
I hope they will update and correct very soon …
Running Mozilla Sea Monkey v1.1.9 under Windows 2000 SP4 w/up-to-date patches, I have the same problem of videos stopping (both video and audio). This problem started recently, but I can’t pin down what change may have preceded it. Flash player is 9,0,115,0 and seems to be the most likely suspect. I do know that the problem exists with other older versions of Sea Monkey as well, as my wife is slow to update and has the same problem. Curiously, the videos always stop at either 2 seconds or 5 seconds of playing time… nothing in between. I’m guessing that is related to some parameter for video size or quality. As others have said, a reboot will fix it, but not for long. Worth noting: I tend to always have a dozen or more tabs open.
Yeah, IE is free of this bug but UGH… can’t do it.
@Steve, Same story here. I submitted a bug report but haven’t heard anything back yet. I’ll post it here if I do.
Thanks for sharing your experience. And I agree, I can handle restarting FireFox every now and then over using IE.
I have found that using noscript plugin to allow/forbid javascript globally several times often resolves the problem temporally.
Hi, i also have this problem when watching/litenning some contents. I have to switch on IE…
It’s problably due to the JS tags used on some websites… But… really that’s s**t through the fans…
man fix your site — i spent ages typing in a comment only to be told that the correct answer to your question (i.e. HOT) was in fact wrong. the back button caused my comment to disappear. boo! i can’t be bothered retyping the whole thing either…
@asdf, really sorry about that. I tested the spam protection plugin when I installed it and it seemed to work. Even the back button thing and stuff seemed okay. I’ve had the same thing happen to me on other sites so I know how you feel.
I’m thinking about writing a comment submission box in Flex so that spam bots won’t be able to use it.
Flash Player 10 beta released !!!
Solves the issue.
@OG LOC, praise be to Flash player 10.
