Pledge drive: Help me help 360|Flex who is helping me

The 360|Flex conference is coming up soon - March 8-10 in San Jose. It seems that John and Tom - the organizers - have everything ready to go except for one little item: getting a sponsor for the USB Thumbdrive that comes in the swag-bag. They offered it to me but it's a little out of my marketing budget for RunPee.com - which is zero dollars. But they are on the hook either way so we worked out a deal. I'll start a pledge drive and try to raise as much money as I can to cover the cost of sponsoring the thumbdrive - $1,300 target. In exchange they will put RunPee.com on it. I'm not on the hook for anything except trying to raise money to cover their costs so that they don't take a loss.

We would all appreciate it if you chipped in a few bucks. I will give every dollar donated to my Paypal account to 360|Flex up until the conference is over. Let me know if you would like for your donation to be public or not because I'll keep a running tab on this page of who donated and how much.

Adobe Ads component idea

October 11th, 2007 . by polyGeek

Of all the components that are supplied by Adobe the one that is missing is an Ads component. Something we can drop into our Flex/AIR apps to display ads and make some money off our work.

Here’s how I would see it working:

  • I would sign up with Adobe, just as I would with Google Ads, for an affiliate account
  • Then all I need to do is place the ad component in my app and give it my affiliate number
  • I could also use data binding to feed it keywords to target the ad content
  • I could specify certain ad attributes: media type – text, Flash, video, etc.
  • Both me and Adobe Make some money

The component would also need to know if it’s in an AIR app and if so then cache some ads in case the user is offline. Then if the user clicks on an ad in offline mode the component would have to store that click and inform the user that they will get more info when they go back online. Or something like that.

The upshot is that Adobe becomes an ad server and will make money off it. Plus we developers will be able to easily place ads in our work and make some money so that we won’t have to work for the man.

Yes, you could do this would Google ads but it would take some work. Wouldn’t you rather have a nice component built by Adobe?

If something here has proved valuable to you then feel free to drop a couple of bucks in the tip-jar.

Man, I hope this post was meant as a joke. You want Adobe to make you an AD COMPONENT? Seriously???

If you’re intent on putting ads into web applications, I’m sure you could make your own.

@Richard, no joke. Sure, I could make my own. But I’d like Adobe to offer something easy to work with. It’s all about easy of integration. I don’t want to have to work for my money any more than necessary.

yeah i was thinking about this the other day actually…

what kind of platform could one develop to serve ads into ria applications. should adobe really be responsible for this…? there’s an opportunity here…

as much as we all hate advertising, it could actually be very discreet in and a lot less intrusive.

email me if you keen on exploring this a bit more…

i’m thinking much bigger than just a component…
