Out of one box, into another

September 16th, 2007 . by polyGeek

SmileBoxPersonal news here. I’m moving on from my job at Xbox to go to work for a small startup in Redmond called SmileBox – or sBox as I like to call them. ;-)

SmileBox provides a service for creating interactive photo/video scrapbooks. They are located in downtown Redmond, WA. You may have seen a bit about them in a video tour/interview that Schoble did about them back in the Spring of ‘07.

I’m very excited about the change. At Microsoft/Xbox I was a contractor/vendor and so not considered a real employee. At SmileBox I will be an employee of the company, complete with stock options, so I’ll have a vested interest in the welfare of the company.

The main reason I decided to move over to SmileBox is because of the work that I will be doing and the opportunity to learn. They have a team of developers who know more about developing applications than I probably ever will.

And SmileBox has a very talented team of designers – two of them are former teammates of mine from Xbox. I’ll be assisting the design team by developing visual effects components that they can use in their designs.

I can’t wait to get in there and start contributing to the team. I have a lot to learn and I’ll be blogging about most of the things that I pick up.

Here’s a SmileBox creation with pictures of me and some of my co-workers. Enjoy, Dan.

Congrats! The fact that you can actually print out the scapbooks is pretty interesting.

@Brian, thanks. Yeah, the SmileBox developers work very hard on that feature. It’s a big hit.

Neat–I think it’s always good to make a change once in a while. Looks like a fun place to be.

Do you know how to UNINSTALL Smilebox? I can’t seem to figure it out. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Marisa

Yes, how do you uninstall Smilebox?

It's a bit shocking that the option is not included in the installer software, and impossible to find in the online support or FAQs… this is a sort of failure of business ethics, especially since the software isn't just the application you launch, but daemons not announced at the time of installation!

Hopefully it's not a big risk, but this shouldn't happen from a reputable company… folks should be careful about Smilebox…

@Franklin, I uninstalled the SmileBox app a while back and I don't remember any problems doing so. But then again, if there's no uninstall I'd probably just go delete it from the Program Files folder.

But I agree, all programs should have an uninstall option from the Control Panel. It's unethical, or just plain lazyness, not to.

I'm fighting this same fight now. I have nothing in the program list in add/remove, and there is no uninstaller. I've sent a note to support, in which I got the default answer of going to the control panel despite the fact I said it wasn't listed there. Smilebox also somehow got into the startup registry and I can't get it out, so every time I reboot, I have to go kill it in task manager b/c it consumes enough resources to matter.

Any updates on how to uninstall this stuff?

@Greg, I think it was listed in the Control Panel add/remove for me. But if not then just go to the Program Files folder and delete it. It's not the best way to remove it but it will be gone. Then you just need to remove it from the startup. Good luck with that.

I, too, loaded Smilebox in order to see a video my husband made w/a friend to enter a contest. Now I cannot uninstall. Every link to this is dead. Program file is NOT found, even w/search feature, yet the icon is on the bottom right of the page and when I 'exit' it, it disappears only to reappear w/my next boot.

I do honestly believe that Smilebox had put it into their program that it (somehow) h ides and makes it IMPOSSIBLE to uninstall the conventional way.

Tell ppl how to UNINSTALL; I am warning all my friends NOT to install.

I didn't much like that it spews popups whenever I sync photos with iPhoto or reminds me about holidays, etc. All with no preference to silence it.

Off it goes.

@Jim, I hear you. SmileBox is walking a fine line between trying to make a few extra cents off ads and alienating their user base.
