A tour of Serenity – the RV that my wife and I live in

March 5th, 2010 . by polygeek

In case you didn’t know my wife and I have been living in a a recreational vehicle for the past year or so. A few people have expressed interest in seeing what it’s like so I thought I’d film a short video – 3:30 minutes.

We named our RV Serenity after the ship in Firefly. I really enjoy living in here. It really simplifies my life: no commute, decent standard of living, very little house work, etc. I’d say the biggest challenge is getting good access to WiFi all the time. But that is getting better all the time.

On the up side I think we spend around $1,500/year to stay in very nice RV parks. This Summer we plan on driving up the West Coast to Oregon and then back down to SoCal in the Fall for MAX.

Let me know if you have any questions about the rig. I’d be happy to answer them.

By the way, it has to be some sort of record that we have two desktop PCs, two laptops and 6 monitors total in this rig. I wouldn’t have it any other way. :)

If something here has proved valuable to you then feel free to drop a couple of bucks in the tip-jar.

Cool, that used to by a dream of mine. Now I have two kids and that dream has passed :) It was really fun watching!!

@Patric: yeah, kids would make it difficult. Not undoable but certainly difficult. Maybe a sailboat would work better for you. That was my dream in college: to build a sailboat and just live on that and write books.

If you make it up in the Bay Area this summer definitely give me a shout. I want a live tour of the Serenity!

@Doug: That’s the plan. I’ll give you a shout as we come by on our way to Oregon.

Wow, I wish I could live like that. Sadly like one of the earlier commentors said, the dream has passed.

Bring that beast over to the UK!

comment number 7 by: polygeek

@Tink, HA! I don’t even want to think about what it would be like to drive my RV in Brittan. SCARRY! I know it’s about the size of a bus but still. I’d probably get stuck in the first round-about that I came to. :)

@Sam, well, maybe when you retire. You never know. I don’t think RVing is as popular in the UK/Europe as it is here in the US. It’s amazing how many people over here do what we’re doing. Although most people who live fulltime in an RV are much older than me and my wife.

If you haven't been there before, I guarantee you will enjoy the Oregon Coast. Done it twice and I'm sure I'll do it again.

Just like all of those who read it I too has an unfulfilled wish of having the tour of the serenity, anyways I hope you have had a nice time with it.

Dan,

Just meet you in passing at 360 flex, I really enjoyed your session. Good content and great sound effects. ;-) I did not find out enough about you there to know you were living the RV lifestyle. You have alot in common with two of my best buds Jim and Rene. I see you dont want links here so I will not try to post one but you should check out thier blog and I bet your paths will cross someday if you stay out on the road. Look them up at liveworkdream.

Its really wonderful, I wish I too had one such Rv to take my "upcoming" wife with myself and have a tour, wish you a very nice time lucky guy!

It's true that here in Europe RVing (as you call it) isn't that popular. I guess it's the lack of parks and places to stay and also with the size of your RVs they would take up both lanes and then some. Phew and as for that amount of computer kit onboard, what's the battery life on the road…. 15 minutes? ;)

comment number 14 by: polygeek

@France, Yeah, we don’t run on batteries here. :) We are looking to add solar panels to the top next year. So we’ll see how that works out.

comment number 15 by: duvaret

So amazing.I think your Solar panels is very good idea.

I would like to see exterior. :)

comment number 16 by: polygeek

@duvaret: I’ll probably do short videos every now and then. Next time I’ll be sure to get to the outside.
