user poll : How would you feel if you purchased a Flex component and later found that it was being given away?

May 4th, 2009 . by polygeek

With the launch of FlexDen.net and the Flex component section at FlashDen.net some Flex developers are wondering what to do if they decide sell their components and then change their mind and decide to give it away. Will people who purchased the component be upset? Will they expect a refund? These are things that developers need to know.

Please tell us your opinion by voting and hopefully commenting below.

Personally I don’t think I would care that much. First, it was probably a client who paid for it, but even if it was my own money then something in the $20 range wouldn’t bother me. Now if we are talking about Adobe suddenly giving away the Flex Charting Components then I might be a bit peeved. I spent hundreds of dollars on those things. But I wouldn’t demand a refund or anything.

Besides, if someone gave away a component that I really liked and used often then I’d likely donate a few bucks to them in my end of year giving back spree.

If something here has proved valuable to you then feel free to drop a couple of bucks in the tip-jar.

I generally buy components (whether code or art assets) because they save me or my company time in implementation. I can pay $100 for an advanced graphing component and think it is a steal because it is saving a week of work and over $1000 in salaried time.

If said component became free later on, the fact that I paid for it would be completely irrelevant because it saved me time and money when I needed it to.

@Barry, thanks for the comment. I feel pretty much the same way. I don't think people often buy components or assets just to have them laying around. They buy them because they need them, now. So if it's free later on then big deal. You probably couldn't have waited for it even if you had known.

I'm in 100% agreement wtih Barry. it's a decision based at a given point of time. It either provided the value and was purchased or it wasn't.
